The Fourth Annual Eastern Wake Charity Softball Tournament for Police, Fire, and EMS was held April 10 at 1226 North White Street in Flaherty Park in Wake Forest.
Seven teams signed up for the event. The entry fee per team was $100. The event was hosted by The Wake Forest Police Department. In charge were Trent Coleman, Scott Graham, and Kim Warren. Rolesville was the overall coordinator of the charity games, led by Police Lt. Matt Anderson, Fireman Lee Price, and EMS Jackie Wall.
The teams represented were from Rolesville Fire, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon, Eastern Wake EMS, Wake Forest Fire, and Wake Forest Police. Rolesville won three games and lost two. The final winner was the Wake Forest Police Department. It was their second year as winners. They received a trophy “and bragging rights.” As winners, the Wake Forest team will host the 2011 Softball Charity Game.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, and water were sold.
In 1997, Patti and Richard Hale formed the Raleigh group as a result of the loss of their son, Detective Paul Andrew Hale, who was killed in the line of duty.
Liane Stocks threw the first pitch of the first game as an honor of her late husband, a State Trooper and former Marine, who crashed while in pursuit of a felon.
A special event, known as the home run derby, was a popular entry at $10.00 for ten swings. Eight players signed up for the derby. Orlando Soto, a Knightdale detective, hit the most homeruns and was awarded a trophy.
Total donations were $1,773.10, which will be contributed to the 200 Club for future use.
